What Converts in Home Design

The research, put together

Three studies fed into this, each looking at a different part of the same funnel: a competitive analysis of home-design and floor-planning products, an SEO audit of how people actually search for this category, and a conversion review of our own path from ad or search result to a finished design.

Individually, each is a fairly ordinary study. It’s the overlap that’s the finding.

What the competitive scan found

Every competitor evaluated requires some form of commitment before you can touch the actual design surface — an account, an email for a “free trial,” a waitlist, or a scheduled call with sales. Some categories of tools (the higher-end, contractor-facing ones especially) treat this as non-negotiable, since their business model depends on the lead. None of them offer a genuinely zero-signup path into a working 3D editor.

What the SEO and conversion data said

Search terms in this category skew toward people trying to see something concrete before they commit to anything — “floor plan tool free,” “design my house online,” phrasing that reads as evaluation, not purchase intent. Our own conversion data showed the same pattern from the other side: the biggest drop-off in the existing funnel happened at the first point we asked for anything — an email, an account — before the visitor had gotten to experience the actual product.

What the app audit confirmed

The app audit (see Screenshot Capture) independently confirmed the one thing that made this actionable rather than just an observation: app.buildmy.house already doesn’t require any of that. The editor opens and works with nothing gated. The gap wasn’t in the product — it was that nothing in our own marketing said this out loud.

The positioning that emerged

Put together, this is what became the homepage decision: lead with “no download, no signup,” because it’s not just a nicer way to say “try it for free” — it’s a claim none of our competitors can make about their own product without changing their business model first.
